Stephen Gill in his own words about his book project: "The photographs are a body of work that emerged during a series of visits to Japan between 2008 and 2009. They are, however, not really about that country at all, being more a reaction to my own life back home in London than a reflection of the places in which they were taken.

I set out to make a series of images in which context would be minimised or completely absent, where we would swim through the muted chaos of the modern world with squinted eyes, muffled whispers of truth demanding closer attention as the visual foundations were reduced sometimes to no more than colour and texture. There would be less room for enhancement, exaggeration, emphasis or amplification."

Each cover of this first edition is individually handpainted by the author.
